With three horses I’ve started to feel like all I do during the summer is go to the feed store and buy fly spray. Can you relate?!
Every time, I just stand there, with eyes glazed over from all the choices. Water repellent, all-natural, sweat resistant. Biting flies, mosquitoes, gnats, fleas, ticks, black widows, scorpions. Whaaat? Why does my fly spray need to kill black widows and scorpions? I’m pulling my hair out already!
With some fly sprays costing upwards of $19.99, I just couldn’t do it anymore. There had to be a better solution. So I searched the trusty internet and found some fantastic fly spray recipes. I have tried several different fly spray recipes and these two are my favorite. Today, I whipped-up a concoction of lemongrass essential oil and citronella essential oil. Not only is it natural, it smells lemony fresh! You can also safely spray it around feeders and water buckets where flies tend to congregate. The lemongrass oil came from Doterra Essential Oils and was around $13, and the Citronella Essential Oil I picked up at Hobby Lobby for around $8.00. With these products combined, I can make about seven bottles of fly spray for around $3.00 a bottle.
That’s a $17.00 savings! If you really want to get thrifty, use an old fly spray bottle to fill instead of buying a new one.
Here are the recipes:
Lemony Fresh Fly Spray
12 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
12 drops Citronella Essential Oil
Fill with 32 oz. warm water
*For an extra fly repellent power, add some apple cider vinegar!
Skin-So-Soft Fly Spray
1 1/2 cups Avon Skin-So-Soft
1 1/2 cups Apple Cider Vinegar
1 1/2 cups Warm Water
Happy fly spraying!
