If you aren’t aware of the magical products made by Helen at The Herbal Horse, you must have your head in the sand. I first found out about her awesome handmade products on Instagram. I followed her for a bit, watched other horsey gals joining in on the fun, and then bit the bullet. I couldn’t resist!
Beka over at The Owls Approve posted a little review and I thought I’d share my purchase too! Here’s a play-by-play picture review of what I bought!
First off, her packaging is ON POINT, guys. So sweet, so fun, so personal. This is when I first opened the package. My daughter instantly read the card, hence the tear… But I quickly stuck it back together for a quick cell phone picture so you could see how nicely it was all put-together.
Inside Helen wrote a little “thank you” for purchasing her products. Helen, if you’re reading this, it was so thoughtful to hand -write this note. I don’t care if all the cards say the exact same thing–it’s so meaningful to receive a handwritten “thank you” note. Do I sense a little southern belle in your past, Helen??
She also included a couple organic suckers stuck together with a hair tie! What a cute idea! My hair tie looked denim-ish, which is basically my fave thing ever. Smart girl, that Helen.
I know what you’re thinking, “so what did you actually buy??” Well, I just bought two things for my first purchase so I could try her stuff out. First, I bought this tiny tin of Healthy Hair. I wish I had bought more. Boo. Next time!
And then I bought this bottle of Shine Bright. Isn’t the packaging super cute?
Helen also included a sample of her Whipped Magic. I really liked this stuff! It started as a solid and then melted into my skin like…MAGIC! This will definitely be in my cart next time.
Okay, on to the actual review of the products! I tried the Healthy Hair first on Hot Rod’s tail. Both my horses live outside full time, so their hair can get dirty, dry, and brittle. The website says to rub the Healthy Hair salve into the base of the tail and then work down, so that’s what I did. Here’s the before of Hot Rod’s POOF of a dry tail. I tried to get all the way down the tail bone.
I have some horses at my barn who tend to rub their dry, itchy tails on the fence and this product would be great for them. Here’s what it looks like in the tin:
Similar to the Whipped Magic, it starts as a solid but if you warm it up in your hands, it starts to melt. I left quite a bit in his hair to really condition it since it was so dry.
After I applied the Healthy Hair, I tried out the Shine Bright. Side note** The very first thing I noticed about both these products was their amazing smell. It immediately reminded me of our honeymoon in Hawaii. The luxurious hotel we stayed at, Hotel Hana Maui, used lemongrass in all their spaces and Healthy Hair and Shine Bright smelled just like it! So thanks, Herbal Horse, for catapulting me back to my “happy place” every time I open my trailer door now. 🙂 ** I sprayed throughout the tail and then brushed it out. Not only did it make it super shiny, it worked well as a dangler.
Looking goooooooood, Hot Rod! So full and shiny and detangled! I repeated the process on Kona. Kona’s tail head was a giant, poofy ball of static electricity. And no, I did not make it look like that… It’s just that embarrassing on it’s own…
And after! So much better! I think these products would work great for before-show-prep! I know some people pull their horse’s tails, but that’s a big no-no to me. Not to mention ouchy! The Healthy Hair really tames those crazy fly-aways and would save you from having to pull it.
Just to be clear, Helen didn’t pay me to write this post. I wrote it because I genuinely enjoyed receiving her products in the mail, the products performed like the website says they will, and I 100% plan on purchasing again in the future. The motivation behind her business was to create an organic equine product line. To be honest with you, I don’t mind chemicals. In fact, I use chemicals on my horses all the time! What drew me to Helen and The Herbal Horse is that she’s a young small business owner like myself and my husband. We each own small businesses and I completely understand the struggles. The highs and the lows. The late nights. The stress. The joy. I get it! And I want to support and celebrate other small businesses and their owners. Helen’s products are handmade-each order put together with her two hands and her heart. I like that 🙂 You go, Helen.
So whether you’re looking for excellent, hard-working, organic equine products (did I mention she has PEOPLE products too?!), or you just want to support another equestrian, you should check her stuff out!
