I’ve ridden Kona several times this week since Hot Rod is waiting to get his injection before we ride again. Hot Rod is jealous, I just know it. I feel awful seeing him stand at the gate whinnying to get out and ride. He wants to ride so bad.
Yeah, right. He’s a total fatty and could care less about being ridden…
But back to Kona. I’ve been faced with a conundrum as he’s grown older. Like many horses, his coat changes with the seasons and even starts to change and fade with age. However, I’m at a point where I truly have no idea what color my horse is now, or what he will be in the future. I have a few educated guesses, but nothing solid.
Let’s start at the beginning. Here is his sale ad as a yearling. Eeeeeeekkk! The cuteness! And that pedigree! Ammiright?! Such a stud.
When we brought him home from the AQHA World Show Salebration he looked exactly like that sale ad picture. Super slick and shiny, his coat was a gorgeous caramel color with black points. A true buckskin if I’ve ever seen one.
We let him grow up for a year and then started saddling. Here’s a picture from the next year. His color was dirtier and mottled, resembling a grullo.
Here’s a picture from our third year together. Where did that deep caramel color go?
Here’s a picture from last year. He’s looking lighter and lighter…
And current day. BOOM. Grey horse.
I feel like I had the rug pulled out from under my buckskin dreams!
It’s easy to say he’s a grey now, but in truth, it is not that easy… According to the AQHA Color Chart, he’s a…dun? No, surely not.
Or, according to this chart, he’s a silver smokey black? Is that even a real thing?
I just need some clarification. Is he a buckskin? A grey with black points? What if he eventually goes ALL GREY. Horror of horrors. I am not a grey horse person…
What do you think? HELP.
