There’s one part of my life that I have yet to delve into on the blog, and it’s high-time I did! And that’s my involvement with Turning Point Ranch, Therapeutic Riding Center.
I’m still fairly new to the TPR team–in January, I will have served on the board of directors for one year! But even in my short time serving with this amazing organization, my eyes have been opened to the world of therapeutic riding.
Since today is Giving Tuesday, I’m going to insert a shameless plug about donating to this organization. TPR is asking for just $10 donations, which will be matched up to $5,000 by a generous donor! For a smaller organization like TPR, $10,000 is invaluable. If you’re a horsey person, you know how much money it takes to care for horses! Horses are vital to our program, and we heavily rely on donations to help keep our horses healthy and happy. So, we need YOUR help!
Here are a few stats on TPR and why you should give $10 to this influential program.
Who: TPR has the ability to provide therapy to a wide range of people groups. We strive to help individuals with ADD, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, developmental delay, Down Syndrome, genetic conditions, head traumas, brain injuries, hearing impairment, visual impairment, speech impairment, and more! TPR serves both children and adults in north central Oklahoma.
What: TPR is a PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) International certified facility. In fact, we are one of only TWO premier accredited facilities in Oklahoma! This means that TPR has met numerous high standards in teaching, education, and safety to reach such a prestigious accreditation.
When: Our therapy sessions coincide with the public school calendars, because we work closely with our public schools. This schedule works great, because our horses get a much-deserved break in the summer time.
Where: Currently, TPR resides at Starr Valley, a boarding facility in Stillwater, but we hope and pray to have a facility to call a home of our own one day!
Why: If you ride horses, you know how time with your four-legged friend can feed your soul. Therapeutic riding is the same concept, but with a concentrated focus. By using horses as a means of therapy, individuals experience an increase in mental focus, core strength, and balance. Therapeutic riding can even aid in the development of verbal communication and fine motor skills. The point of therapeutic riding at TPR is not relief for an individual for a one-hour session, but the development and nurturing of skills that continue outside of the barn and spill into all other areas of their lives! We aim to change lives through horses. How cool is that?
How: As I said before, TPR heavily relies on donors to keep our program running. Donations help directly pay for grain and hay, veterinary needs, tack and equipment, and continuing education for our instructors.
Please consider donating just $10 this Giving Tuesday to Turning Point. Our horses and riders thank you! And, if this has interested you, please investigate your area to see if you can help with YOUR local therapeutic riding program!
