Every year, in addition to making a list of goals, I pick a word for the year. This word gives me focus and keeps my priorities in check. I’ve chosen a variety of words in the past, including: resolve, ambassador, and true. For 2017, I had a difficult time choosing a word. It needed to be personal, meaningful, and uplifting. I agonized over what it should be, spending time in prayer, and talking to my husband. After much thought, I settled on the word “shine.”
Have you ever been through a season in your life where you just felt dull? Dull because of the monotony, dull because of the hardships, dull because of the bad news you constantly hear? I’m done with feeling dull, and I’m ready to shine.
My word for the year generally comes from a spiritual place, but my spirituality is all encompassing. So I will use the word as a focus for my family life, my work life, my relationships, and everything in between. I think this is a little word, often overlooked but it can be quite powerful. Positivity is a choice, you know, and it rubs off on the people around you.
To begin our year on the right foot, my husband and I took an overnight trip together to a teeny little cobblestone town called Medicine Park in south western Oklahoma. The area is beautiful, rocky and “mountainous” for Okie standards. It’s very different than my flat prairie land up in the northern part of the state. There’s even a wildlife reserve nearby with bison and free-range long horn cattle. It definitely has that old west vibe that I love.
It’s so important to regroup and take some time to renew your mind when you feel dull. Getting away is essential. Fresh air and sunlight are vital for my soul’s well-being.
I highly recommend choosing a word for your year ahead. It doesn’t have to mean anything to anybody else, but YOU. I’ve compiled a list to get you started! Think on it, pray on it, and then ACT on it!
