I’d like to introduce Rocking E’s newest member of the four-legged family, Baby Moo Moo!
We are horse people to the core. Let me rephrase. I am a horse girl to the core. My husband is extremely supportive of my horsey habit and business. He can feed and muck stalls, put on blankets, and fix fence with the best of them, but he has been DYING to get cows for several years now. Several of his close friends are ranchers and he has been pining to get into the business himself. We’ve been waiting for the right time, and that time was last fall! We have just enough acreage to keep a few mama cows and babies-a hobby farm. He worked hard to put up fence, and save his money for a couple bred Hereford cows.
Honestly, he couldn’t have picked better cows. They’re well-bred Herefords, very healthy, and gentle enough to let our kiddos pet their heads while they eat. Our first mama had her baby last week. We’ve been watching very carefully since it was our first time, but she did it all on her own quickly and quietly.
She only had one complication, a retained placenta. It’s been a learning experience for us! Thankfully one of my boarders is a food animal veterinarian and I was able to consult with her about drugs and care for Mama Moo Moo. I learned all about antibiotics and estrogen shots, and how to care for a retained placenta. I love learning new things, so I gobbled up all the knowledge I could. Mama Moo Moo and Baby are doing excellent, by the way, and Cowy should be having her baby soon, too!
P.S. Our cows are named Moo Moo and Cowy. I didn’t name them, but I bet you can guess who did 😉
