I shared with y’all a couple weeks ago that Hot Rod kicked Kona pretty hard on the shoulder, and then I realized I never followed up with that story! There’s nothing better than an injury photo series so you can see the healing process.
Those kicks left him really sore and swollen, but thankfully I was riding him again around Day 7. He was no longer lame or too sore to exercise. I actually felt like the exercise was good for him! To treat him, I kept him in a stall in the evenings and let him out during the day. We had rain on and off that whole week, so I felt better about bringing him in the barn instead of sloshing around with his meanie-head brother. I used a low dose of bute the first few days, and applied DMSO to the swelling and fluid pockets. It really did the trick for drawing out that extra fluid build-up! On May 5th I show a close-up of the little open wound he got. I clipped around the small wound and applied Heal Quick from The Herbal Horse.
The swelling is completely gone now, and it doesn’t seem to hurt. I do feel like his shoulder just looks, er, different than it did before. Not much I can do about that now. I’m just glad nothing was fractured! I gave them both a stern talkin’ to, so I don’t expect to see anymore brotherly quarrels anymore. 😉
