We used Thanksgiving break to take advantage of great weather and extra time to ride horses. Gracie gains more confidence with every ride on Hot Rod, and it makes me so happy. I try not to pick apart her riding too much, but just remind her to keep her heels down and her hands low. Feeling safe and having fun is what is most important right now, and the real training can come gradually.
Usually, I tack up Kona and ride alongside her so I can get a ride in too. Notice he still has TWO eyeballs, and his surgery was scheduled for the day before I took this picture. More on that later…
On Thanksgiving morning, before our big festivities started, the girls both wanted to ride, so we introduced them to riding double. They absolutely loved it. Riding double bareback with your favorite sister is pretty special. I’m grateful for such a sweet-natured fat horse to use. 🙂
They also worked with me in the barn every afternoon. With most of my boarders gone for the holiday, it was the perfect time for them to pitch in with stalls or prepping grain and carting hay.
On Friday, I taught Gracie some basics in the round pen. She’s been watching me for years, so she caught on quickly.
She’s becoming quite the little horsewoman! While we spend time together outside I asked her what she wanted for Christmas and she said she wanted to upgrade her grooming tools. Consider it DONE.
Hope you had a horsey Thanksgiving!
