Rebecca, over at Diary of the Overanxious Horse Owner, wrote a post (about pads) back in August as a follow-up to me searching for a new saddle pad, and questioning her about what she uses. So, here we are, many weeks later and I can finally say that I decided on a new pad! I mean, it only took me like, a million days.
I have been working on this decision for an extended period of time because western saddle pads are so dang expensive! I’ve been using my old one for several years, so they do get lots of use for the money. But, still. #horsepoor
I’ve been reading reviews, creeping on other bloggers, searching Amazon, scouring Pinterest, and so on. In my original post about pads, I had my eyes set on one of these bad boys, all costing at least $100.
But, then Rebecca steered me towards Diamond Wool pads. I was not familiar with Diamond Wool! They looked high quality, are affordable, came in many options, and they’re made here in the United States. And if Rebecca says they’re cool, well, then they’re cool.
The last nudge I needed to buy a Diamond Wool pad happened when I was sweeping out my tack room and I noticed one of my boarders had one of the above pads. This pad normally runs about $200. I picked it up and gave it a thorough examination. I did not see anything worth $200. So, that hammered the final nail in the big-brand coffin.
That night I ordered a plain, greyish black Diamond Wool pad on Amazon for $73.36 and it shipped in TWO days. Holla! I love you, Amazon Prime!
It’s not real fancy, but it has been working great so far. The 32 x 32 fits Kona great and looks good with my saddle. I’ve only used it a handful of times, and it’s already molding into a perfect rounded shape. I’m very impressed by the quality for the price! Maybe pricey doesn’t always indicate better quality?
My plan is to try it on Kona for a while, and if it works as well as I hope, then I’ll order another one for Hot Rod, but in a creme color. Because I know they talk behind my back, and they don’t like it when I buy them matchy-matchy things. They are their own individuals, after all.
Doesn’t he look so handsome?!
It may have taken weeks to decide, but I love knowing I spent my money wisely!
